Why Tom Hardy Left Apple TV’s Nocturne, and How Liev Schreiber Took Over the Lead
Apple TV’s newest crime thriller has become a global hit within days of its premiere, but its lead role almost went to someone else. Tom Hardy was originally attached to Nocturne, a dark series adapted from a bestselling Scandinavian crime saga. Instead, Liev Schreiber took over, and showrunner John Hlavin has now explained how that change reshaped the character. Interest in his comments sent searches soaring. Here, we look at what happened with Tom Hardy and Nocturne, what Schreiber brought to the part, and why Nocturne on Apple TV is drawing such a big audience.
What Nocturne Is About
Schreiber’s character, Jonah Lynn, served in the military before becoming a homicide detective, and he leaves the tough streets of Philadelphia for a quieter life in a small town in western Pennsylvania. His fresh start falls apart when a cunning serial killer, Jurek Walter, begins targeting the town and his family, as Dark Horizons described.
The 10-part series adapts the Joona Linna books written by Swedish couple Alexander Ahndoril and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril under the shared pen name Lars Kepler, drawing in particular on the books The Sandman and Lazarus.
The cast
Alongside Schreiber, the series stars:
- Stephen Graham as the serial killer Jurek Walter
- Zazie Beetz, who also serves as an executive producer
- Rory Culkin, Gary Carr, Chrissy Metz, Bill Camp and Poorna Jagannathan in supporting roles
Why Tom Hardy Is No Longer Involved
Early reports had linked Hardy to the project, both in front of and behind the camera. As development continued, he was no longer involved, and Schreiber and Graham joined the series instead. In an interview with ScreenRant, Hlavin addressed the change and how the lead character evolved once Schreiber came on board.
Hlavin did not suggest any falling-out. Instead, he focused on what the new star brought to the show.
How Liev Schreiber Reshaped the Role
According to Hlavin, Schreiber brought a sharp eye for detail and an insistence on authenticity. The showrunner praised the actor’s intelligence and said his top priority was making every moment feel real.
That attention to detail shaped the character from day one. Hlavin recalled that the very first scene filmed, which appears in the pilot, shows Jonah walking through the woods studying a map, a moment shaped by early conversations about how the detective would really behave. Those discussions influenced the adjustments the team made to the character, giving Jonah a grounded, practical edge that fits Schreiber’s style.
A Global Streaming Hit
The series premiered on October 30, 2026, and has quickly become one of Apple TV’s biggest launches. It has reached the No. 1 spot in more than 70 countries, according to streaming tracker FlixPatrol, as CBR reported.
The show’s pedigree helps. Emmy-winning director Tim Van Patten directed the first two episodes, the series was created for television by writer Rowan Joffé, and it is produced by A+E Studios with Range Studios.
